Honor Societies

A Mark of Distinction

Honor Societies are a great way to get involved with other high-achieving students within your discipline of study. Membership is primarily invite-only and requires specific academic credentials in order to join. If you are interested in any of the honor societies listed below, please contact the appropriate college associated with the applicable group.

Alpha Kappa Delta

Sociology

Western New England University is recognized as the Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta. In order to be eligible for nomination students much show overall academic excellence and a serious interest and commitment to the study of sociology.

Alpha Lambda Delta

First Year Students

Alpha Lambda Delta is the national honor society that recognizes academic excellence during a student's first year in college. The purpose of this honor society is to encourage superior academic achievement among freshmen and to promote leadership early in the student's collegiate experience. By vote of the membership, each newly inducted member of Alpha Lambda Delta commits himself/herself to participate in two community service events per year of membership.

Membership is open to first-year students who earn a cumulative average of at least 3.5 either in their first semester of enrollment or in their first year of enrollment prior to initiation. No incomplete or failures can be on record. To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time in a degree program and have not earned more than 19 credits at the time of initial enrollment. The offer of membership is only extended once and may not be repeated after it has been declined. Once inducted, membership is lifetime and is maintained on both a national and local chapter basis. Members who graduate from Western New England University are afforded the privilege of wearing honors cord designation provided their GPA of 3.50 is maintained.

Alpha Mu Alpha

Marketing

Alpha Mu Alpha is the national marketing honor society of the American Marketing Association (AMA), open to seniors and graduate students majoring in Marketing or Marketing Communications in the College of Business who are also members of the AMA. This honor society was formed to recognize and reward academic excellence in the discipline and science of marketing. The Western New England University official Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association established this chapter of Alpha Mu Alpha in 2014. 

Alpha Phi Sigma

Criminal Justice

Alpha Phi Sigma is the only Criminal Justice Honor Society for Criminal Justice majors. Alpha Phi Sigma recognizes academic excellence; students must maintain a minimum of 3.2 overall GPA and 3.2 GPA in criminal justice courses. The student must also rank in the top 35% of their classes and have completed a minimum of four courses within the criminal justice curriculum. The Honor Society is open to those with a declared criminal justice major or minor.

Beta Alpha Psi

Accounting

Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary organization for financial information students and professionals. The primary objective of Beta Alpha Psi is to encourage and give recognition to scholastic and professional excellence in the business information field. This includes promoting the study and practice of accounting, finance, and information systems; providing opportunities for self-development, service, and association among members and practicing professionals, and encouraging a sense of ethical, social, and public responsibility.

Beta Gamma Sigma

Business

Beta Gamma Sigma is the honor society for students enrolled in collegiate business and management programs accredited by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in an undergraduate or master's program at a school accredited by AACSB International. Beta Gamma Sigma membership conveys academic excellence and a commitment to high principles and superior achievement.

Delta Delta Epsilon

Forensic Science

Delta Delta Epsilon is the Forensic Science Honor Society at Western New England University.

Lambda Pi Eta

Communication

Lambda Pi Eta is the official communication studies honor society of the National Communication Association (NCA). As an accredited member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), Lambda Pi Eta has nearly 400 active chapters at colleges and universities worldwide. The goals of Lambda Pi Eta are to recognize, foster, and reward outstanding scholastic achievement; stimulate interest in the field of communication; promote and encourage professional development among communication majors; provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas about the field; establish and maintain close relationships and understanding between faculty and students; and explore options for further graduate studies.

Mortar Board Senior Honor Society Pynchon chapter is formed of student leaders who have shown examples of scholarship, leadership, and service. The organization strives to create events on campus to incorporate these three values. As a member, you will be able to create bonds with other seniors and increase visibility on campus.

Omicron Delta Kappa

Leadshership

Omicron Delta Kappa has three main purposes: to recognize those who have attained a high standard of efficiency in collegiate activities and to inspire others to strive for conspicuous attainments along similar lines; to bring together the most representative students in all phases of collegiate life and thus to create an organization which will help to mold the sentiment of the institution on questions of local and intercollegiate interest; to bring together members of the faculty and student body of the institution, as well as other Omicron Delta Kappa members, on a basis of mutual interest, understanding, and helpfulness.

Omicron Delta Kappa recognizes achievement in scholarship, athletics, campus/community service, social/religious activities, campus government, journalism, speech, mass media, and the creative and performing arts.

Phi Alpha Theta

History

Phi Alpha Theta is the national honor society in history. The society promotes the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication, and the exchange of learning and ideas. The society seeks to bring students, teachers, and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication.

Pi Mu Epsilon

Mathematics

Pi Mu Epsilon is a national mathematics honor society.  It was founded at Syracuse University and incorporated at Albany, New York on May 25, 1914.  The purpose of Pi Mu Epsilon is the promotion and recognition of mathematical scholarship among students in postsecondary institutions.  It aims to do this by electing members on an honorary basis according to their proficiency in mathematics and by engaging in activities designed to promote the mathematical and scholarly development of its members.

Pi Sigma Alpha 

Political Science and Law & Society

Pi Sigma Alpha is the National Political Science Honor Society. Each chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha is encouraged to provide a framework for enriching the exposure of its members and the wider university community to the study of government and issues of public concern. To be eligible for membership, Political Science and Law & Society majors must have distinguished themselves in the study of law, government, and politics.

Psi Chi

Psychology

Psi Chi is the International Honor Society in Psychology, founded for the purposes of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology. To be eligible for membership, students must be enrolled as a major or minor in a psychology program. Students must also have completed 9 semester hours of psychology courses with at least a GPA of 3.0 in the courses. 

Sigma Tau Delta

English

Sigma Tau Delta's central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta strives to confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies; provide, through its local chapters, cultural stimulation on college campuses and promote interest in literature and the English language in surrounding communities; foster all aspects of the discipline of English, including literature, language, and writing; promote exemplary character and good fellowship among its members; exhibit high standards of academic excellence, and serve society by fostering literacy.

Sigma Beta Tau

Engineering

Sigma Beta Tau, also known as the Society of the Blue Triangle, is the College of Engineering's alumni honor society. Western New England University graduating engineering seniors whose academic work has consistently been of honor quality and have a GPA of 3.3 or greater is eligible for membership. Members of Tau Beta Pi may be invited to join Sigma Beta Tau.

Tau Beta Pi

Engineering

Tau Beta Pi is a national engineering honor society founded in 1885. Its purpose is to "mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their alma mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as students or by their attainment as alumni." Engineering students are eligible for membership if they are juniors in the upper eighth of their class or are seniors in the upper fifth of their class.
