Pursuing a career in statistics in data science is a smart move, not just because it is trendy and pays well, but because data may be the pivot point on which the entire economy turns. 

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the demand for data science skills will drive a significant rise in employment in the field for the next few years. Not only is there a large demand, but there is also a noticeable shortage of qualified data scientists.

Statistics and data science benefit both companies and consumers, and a degree in Data Science and Statistics prepares graduates for a variety of careers. Data scientists might enable retailers to inluence consumer purchasing habits, improve public health through wearable trackers that motivate individuals to adopt healthier habits and itentify critical health issues, predict fundraising needs for nonprofit organizations, advise food suppliers on how to cut down on food waste, or they might assist farmers with efficient food growth and delivery.

Data Science and Statistics students are active in Alpha Lambda Delta (first-year honor society), Pu Mu Epsilon (mathematics honor society), Entrepreneurship Club, Math Club, and Problem Solving Club. Many of our students also participate in varsity and intramural sports, special interest groups, and student government.

Clubs and Organizations

The Department of Mathematics faculty members are excellent and dedicated teachers. We have won four of the 26 University-wide Excellence in Teaching Awards awarded annually, and some Department members have won similar awards at their previous institutions. Our faculty members are also active researchers and work in areas such as statistics, applied mathematics, nonlinear waves, number theory, algebraic geometry, and mathematics of origami. Some faculty members hold grants (including NSF grants) that support undergraduate research. All full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members in the Department hold doctoral degrees.
